Root Canal Therapy
If you are experiencing tooth pain, it may be a sign you need root canal therapy. If you are in Kerrville and may need a root canal, you are in excellent hands with Dr. Matthew Huff.
Each of your teeth is hydrated and kept healthy by the pulp, located in a center chamber of the tooth. If a tooth has decay that has gone untreated and penetrated down to the pulp, it becomes infected. This infection can seriously compromise your oral health and cause great pain. Dr. Huff can remove the infected pulp and restore your oral health comfortably.
What can I expect?
If Dr. Huff determines you need a root canal, don’t worry. Root canal therapy can be comfortable with our many sedation options. Dr. Huff will remove the infected pulp and replace it with a rubbery substance. Then, depending on how much natural tooth remains, he will either place a filling or a crown to restore the tooth.
If an infection goes untreated, you may need to have a tooth extraction. Other reasons you may require a tooth extraction include:
- If a tooth has been too badly damaged due to decay
- If you have experienced trauma that has too badly damaged a tooth
- If you have advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
- If you need orthodontic work and space is needed a tooth may be extracted
- If you have wisdom teeth (third molars)
What can I expect?
If you require a tooth extraction, Dr. Huff will make you as comfortable as possible. If you are anxious or nervous there are many options for sedation to ease any anxiety. Dr. Huff will first numb the area and then extract the tooth or teeth. During treatment the area will be numb so you should feel little to no pain. After surgery, it is important to keep the area clean, refrain from smoking and drinking through straws. Dr. Huff will give you full instructions for postoperative care.
