Children’s Oral Health and What To Watch For

Our youth and next generation have immense needs for their success as healthy adults. Much depends on what they eat and drink and how it all affects their teeth and gums. There are several signs and symptoms in children that can give early an warning of illnesses or diseases present in the body, and whether or not they are suited for braces, or other forms of treatment. Maintaining your child’s oral health at an early age is essential for their well-being.

Signs and Symptoms For Dental Care

In addition to scheduling bi-annual visits to your dentist for examinations and teeth cleaning, you can look out for the following signs and symptoms that your children may require treatment beyond normal dental care:

  1. Sensitivity to high and low temperature – If you notice your child is uncomfortable eating ice cream or other frozen foods, there’s a strong chance they might have tooth decay . The same also goes for hot foods.
  2. Overcrowding – As their teeth are developing, oftentimes one or more teeth get edged out. This can be a genetic problem. However, it’s best to consult with your dentist to explore the reasons and discuss options for treatment.
  3. Gums that appear redder than normal – Gum disease can begin early in a person’s life. This usually results from poor brushing habits or a heavily-sugared diet. If the gums are more red than normal, this might be a clue to the onset of gingivitis (gum disease) or some other infection in the mouth.
  4. Pain when chewing or biting – Because a child’s teeth are forming and vying for space, any painful chewing of crunchy or sticky foods or discomfort when biting down while their mouths are closed is another sign that there could be a dental issue.
